Holiday tips for keeping your teeth healthy

Dec 1st, 2011

It’s the holiday season! As a family dentist in Louisville, we’re pleased to see families getting together and enjoying their favorite foods together. However, we’d like to offer a few suggestions to help you make sure that this holiday season doesn’t leave a lasting "gift” of additional cavities, toothaches or other oral health problems.

Pick up a travel toothbrush and a travel-sized tube of your preferred dentifrice. With all the traveling that goes along with the holiday season, you may find your regular dental hygiene routines disrupted. The next time you’re out, grab an inexpensive travel brush and your favorite toothpaste in travel size so you’ll be prepared! Some travel floss wouldn’t be a bad idea, either.

Take it easy on the cookies and punch. We know that Christmas just isn’t the same without one of Mom’s molasses cookies, but try to exercise some moderation. Sugary sweets can be really hard on your teeth. And some of the highly acidic ingredients in holiday punch can wear away at your enamel.

The veggie tray is your friend. Broccoli, celery and apple slices, in addition to being low in sugar and acid, have lots of fiber that can sweep some of the debris from your teeth between brushes. Especially if you plan to "graze” over the whole day, try to alternate carb-heavy treats and acidic drinks with fiber-rich veggies and a glass of water.

Our entire office wishes you and yours a happy, healthy holiday season. Keep smiling!
