As a family dentist in Louisville, Kentucky, we often have patients call and ask us about milestones in their children’s dental health and development. As parents, every new experience that their child undergoes is a big event. From the first tooth, to their first dentist appointment, parents want to know what to expect when it comes to their child’s bright smile.
Most babies begin teething around 4-5 months. However, some children have made it to their first birthday without their first tooth, and other babies have been born with two! Typically, it’s the lower central incisors that come in first, quickly followed by the upper central incisors. But it’s important to keep in mind that every child is different.
Most babies should have their first dentist visit around their first birthday. Aside from making sure there aren’t any signs of trouble, this also helps to familiarize the child with the dentist’s office, helping to reduce fear of the dentist later in life.
As soon as your child has his first tooth, he or she should get his first toothbrush. Some dentists recommend that you brush with only water until he or she is a year old. After that, a pea-sized dollop of toothpaste should be enough.
Your child should have a full set of primary ("babyâ€) teeth by the age of three. Permanent teeth should start coming in at around 6 years old. Get used to that cute gap-toothed grin, because he or she will probably continue losing baby teeth until the age of 12.
As if the teen years didn’t have enough challenges, wisdom teeth will begin showing up between 12 -17 years of age. Additionally, orthodontic care (including braces) may be needed starting at around 8 years old.
Whether your child is 8 days old, or 18 years, we’re happy to be your trusted family dentist. If it’s been a while since you or your kids have had a checkup, call SmileCare Family Dental today to schedule an appointment.
